So I haven't heard good things about OBs in this city and so I decided to look into midwives. I have heard really good things about one in particular and saw her about a month ago. I'll be honest- I was a little nervous, but she seemed competent and I felt comfortable in her hands (was that a pun?) Although, I wasn't comfortable with her tech.
So, tell me if this is normal...
We go in and the tech (we'll call her Her) is obviously nervous and our conversation goes as such:
Her: So, would you like to take a specimen?
Me: Uh, if you want me to.
Her: Ok. There is a cup in the bathroom.
-a few minutes later-
Her: So, would you like to get undressed?
Me: Sure, if you want me to.
Her: Great. The nurse will be in a minute.
- a few minutes later-
She opens the door with crazy eyes and I was worried for a minute that the building was on fire... and then she says this:
Her: I made a mistake!!! Put your clothes back on!!!! Hurry! Before she comes in the room!!
Me: Uh, ok.
Crazy Lady. Dave and I were trying quite hard to restrain our laughing until she left the room. But, wait- it gets much better.
So, I go back a month later and the same Crazy Lady comes to get me from the waiting room...
Her: Hi. How are you doing today.
Me: I'm fine. How are you?
Her: Fine. So, did you bring a specimen in today?
Me: ...Uh, did I bring a specimen in? No, I didn't bring a specimen.
Her: Oh, okay. So you forgot it?
Me: Mmm... No, I didn't forget it. I purposely didn't bring any pee with me. I'm not really comfortable carrying a cup of pee with me around town and even if I was I don't have any supplies at home that would allow me to do so.
Her: Hmph. Well, I'll just grab some for you so that you can take them for next time.
Me: No, no. I won't be doing that. I'll just come here and do it.
Her: Well, okay then.
Uh, are you kidding? Am I missing something? Do people do that all the time and I'm just unaware of it? I don't remember seeing anyone in the waiting room with a cup of yellow fluid, but who knows, maybe they stashed it in their purse.
Well, now I'm ready to rethink my decision. I guess when I start looking for someone who knows how to deliver babies I need to rethink the questions I should be asking. instead of asking "How long have you been delivering babies and how do you feel about C-sections?" I really should be asking- "So do I need to bring my urine from home or can I take care of that here at the office?"
Crazy pants.

Seriously, you have to be kidding!!! I take my pee to the doctor all the time! Just kidding. I am just sitting here laughing! I can't believe that that really happened to you! Wow! That is really the only word I can think of do describe how I feel about your experience. Wow!
Basically, I couldn't believe they expect you to march into their office with a cup or yellow fluid. . . Hilarious!
What is that about???
I dont know what office you are going to but that sounds crazy. I can not believe it, she sounds like she does not have a clue as to what she is doing. Are you really switching or is the midwife worth the crazy tech?
OH. MY. HELK. Who does Her think she is anyway??
Ok that is beyond bizarre! Who does that, and why is she so strange and awkward! Well I have liked my doc if your interested. Granted I haven't delivered any babies with their office but Laura has. It is OBGYN associates of Erie.
HA! I think you had that experience just to make me laugh, hard. I love to hear about the crazies, especially if it doesn't happen to me! I think if she were to deliver your baby she would ask you when you came in, "Did you bring your baby with you?!"
yep I'm pretty sure i'd be outta there. Good luck with that.
That is so funny. I am so glad to see you posted. I'm glad you are loving it there. You look so cute preggers! I miss you guys though. Hope all is well. Love you!
Cicely...hey, this is Amber (Kerecman) Bundy. I found your blog from Jacque's. Congrats on your second baby! I didn't even know that you had one already:) Two is a lot of fun, but a handful...I have two boys, I should know! It's good to see that you are doing well!!
A couple of my thoughts as I was reading your great story.
1. Thats what you get for going to see a witch.
2. I wish steroid drug testing was this easy.
3. I think you should take some cups home, but have Dave pee in them. That would be fun to see how she reacts to those tests.
4. Are you going to birth at home? If so, I hope you don't splatter any afterbirth on those cute wood floors at your new house.
CICELY SUITE...CAIN!!!! I found your blog from Jackie's blog and I was so excited because I thought you disappeared!! I can't believe you already have a little baby and another on the way!!! I am preggers with my first "fetus" (I love that you call your baby that btw) I am due on THanksgiving day:) Do you know what you are having? I am having a girl, I am so excited!! I can't believe you guys live in Pennsylvania, and your house is adorable!! I am so excited to have found you, you look great, and you have such a cute happy family!!!!
p.s. My sister used a midwife for all three of her births and she LOVED it, I would use one too, but I live in the boondocks and there aren't any within 100 miles...
i'm sorry that the nurse was a dork...some are just so retarded..congrats on getting pregnant again...you will need to keep me updated! i miss you!!
HAHA! i am laughing out loud! Thanks for the post, I am looking forward to picks of Miles. :) Good luck!
first of all, hello! second i am really laughing...hard, in fact i am waking up my sleeping husband. so it is the same here in california. each appintment i get sent home with my brown paper bag containing my pee cup. i guess they just really want that fresh early morning pee...weird. so we are due so close, i am the end of december. fun to see your blog.
I'm laughing so hard that I'm crying! Any more of this and I'm going to need to get my own sample cup! You're hillarious, Cicely!
How funny! They asked me that every time when I was preggers with Beckham too. Always thought it was weird.
I LOVED my doctor...Dr. Thompson with OBGYN Assoc. of Erie. Or Dr. Skatella (sp?) is good too...he just delivered Suzi's baby.
In all, UT docs are WAY better so hang in there!
How are you enjoying the humidity? Have you been to Aldi yet? I'm jealous you went to Niagra, maybe we'll go for our five year this november. We are yet to re-do our kitchen. We just went to IKEA today to start planning. are we in for a treat or what? I'm worried about finding a good doctor. The one I had in Fort Collins was perrrrrfect. I like the pee question, I will use that during my doctor interviews. I'm glad you love it there!
I just delivered via C-section with Dr. Scutella from that office, and they asked me every time if I had brought my pee with me. I totally thought this was weird too, and never once did I show up at that office toting my "specimen" in anything other than my bladder. So, just don't take it. They'll just have to deal with it. I don't know why it's such a big deal to them. They just stick a little piece of paper in it. Good luck!
OK Cic -
I've read the pee story... now I'm ready for something new. :) Sooo apparently in Erie it's not so odd to tote around samples of your pee. . . I wish I would've known that odd factoid when I was going to school at Indiana Wesleyan; I think that explains a lot about the Midwest mentality, eh? :) Or should I say MENTAL-ity? Wait, that was stupid.
PS. Holden got his first letter today. It was from his cousin, Fetus Cain. I'm hoping that you knew it was sent, because if not... Miles and fetus cain are in serious cahoots behind your back (and yes, I just used the word cahoots).
Call me. I guess everyone is hanging out with you guys except for me, Danny and Holden. Btw, Holden had his first play date today... We went swimming with a bunch of my lady friends and their kids, but I don't think it seemed different to him than any other day, you know? Since not much changes as far as his vantage point from inside the womb.
Miss you -
Suite
PS. I'm totally with Darth Spencer... have Dave take your sample for you.
That is so funny. Mayber you should just do the doctor thing Cis. I miss you guys, love.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! That's the BEST! We love and miss you guys! Hugs to all.
Cicels.. Funny although as a nurse having people bring in a urine sample from home isn't all that uncommon but there seems to be a lack of communication and direction on the part of this clinic that you are going to. I think it is time to find someone different, and didn't you say your midwife was kind of manly anyway, not that there is anything wrong with that.
Also, I didn't appreciate that Darth guy comment that you were seeing a witch even though I know he was trying to be funny, nurse midwives are the best maybe just not this one with the crazy tech.
Well good luck in trying to bring forth a child in Erie, PA. Loves to you..Lib and I may come in October for a visit.
