A letter to my baby.

October 7, 2008 3:37PM

Dearest Miles,

Today you are two years old. Two years ago, on this day, at this time, I was holding you for the very first time. I will never find the right words to express how special that moment was to me. You are my joy. You are the first thing I think about in the morning when I wake up and the last thing I think about before I fall asleep. I truly love you with all of my heart. Even though you are getting older and soon you will have a little sister- you will always be my baby.

While your Dad and I were waiting to meet you at the hospital on October 7, 2006, we decided to write you a letter to tell you how excited we were to meet you. I couldn’t wait to see what you were going to look like, to smell like, to be like. I could only hope that you would be happy and healthy. Now, you are two years old and I have seen you, smelled you, talked with you, and loved you. To me you are perfect.

You were born with beautiful thick, dark eyelashes and great big eyes that get compliments daily from friends, family and strangers. You have a very big head (100th percentile!) to hold that amazing brain of yours. You are one of the smartest little people I know. You have a belly button that isn’t quite inny and isn’t quite outty. You love to show it to people. You have amazing dexterity and get frustrated quite easily when something doesn’t work out the way you think it ought to.

By the time you were one year old, you knew over 100 signs and many words that you spoke. You have always been able to communicate well. When you were six months old, you produced your first sign: “milk.” You could always tell me when you were hungry and soon you learned the sign for “please”- so polite. As of late, your favorite things to say are “What’s that noise?”, “Hold ja me!,” and “I wanna see it!”. You know all the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. You can count to twelve (although you usually skip the number four) and then you say “torteen, torteen, torteen.” It is the cutest thing in the whole world. You have recently started reading books and singing songs by yourself- your favorites are the popcorn song, the itsy bitsy spider song and the alphabet song. I love that you do all the actions, but only say the last word of each line.

You have always had special things happen on special days. My birthday, June 19, you were six months old and crawled (I guess I should say army crawled) to a plate of cupcakes that were sitting on the floor. Mothers Day was when we first found out that you had allergies to food- that was a day I will never forget. Then, on Christmas Eve, you decided to walk from Gram Gram to Emily. It was about three or four steps and Christmas morning you were up and about and walking around the rest of the day.

Many other things have happened since you were you born, you have a full set of beautiful teeth, you just started jumping with both feet off the ground, you can almost do a somersault, and you have been doing a great downward dog pose since you could lift your body up enough to do so. One of my favorite things that you do is constantly remind Daddy and me to say our prayers before meals, before bedtime and other random times during the day.

Last year, when you turned one, we had a birthday party for you and invited both the Cains and the Suites. You played with a balloon all morning and by the time the guests arrived, you were very tired. You didn’t have very much fun at your party and it didn’t help that you touched the candle on your monkey cake and got burned. I hope this birthday goes a little better for you.

We went to the zoo this morning with Andersen and some of your other friends. They sang you happy birthday three times and you said “thank you” each time. Today we are going to Port Farms with Daddy and then we are going to have cupcakes and open presents with Gram Gram, Bumpa and Emily online.

Miles, you are my favorite boy in the whole world. You have changed my life in every way and I think I am a better person than I was two years ago because of you. Thank you for all that you have taught me. I can’t wait to see what else you will teach me, your Dad and your baby sister in years to come. Have I told you today that I love you?

I love you. So much.

Your adoring Mom.

Cic, I echo annie... as Junie B would say "my eyes got a little watery in them."

I've been telling everyone the story about you asking Miles if he's a Democrat or a republican and he says "Ima pump-kin."

I'm not sure if that makes him an independent, socially conservative or just excited for the 31st and to wear a costume.

I love you and this was a beautiful letter.

Love -
me
